Does it get much better than a small town county fair?! Especially the OLDEST county fair in all of Texas?! No way! It is the perfect August celebration! It's hot as the dickens but no one really cares because they are having so much fun. We had a blast entering our goods: an almond cake with fresh mint and pluot cream cheese icing, pears, and figs. The pears and figs both were awarded second place ribbons...yee-haw...but the cake must have been a little out there....it didn't place...wha wha...oh well! There is always next year!!!
I love the stuck in time feel of our fair. Any change may give me a heart attack! The handmade quilts, needlework entries, shelves of canned goods, hay bails and millet, crocheted and knitted works, and even people's potted plants are all there for some good ol fashioned judging and it just really makes my heart flutter...I love it so much! The tractor races and mutton bustin' are pretty stinkin' adorable and my little girlie said that someday she wants to be the Fair Queen. I can't forget to mention the horse races that go by in a flash but the anticipation is fun as can be. Oh man the fair is great! This year was super special because we got the chance to spend a little time with our sweet neighbor, Mr. Basse, who said that this was his 85th time to the Gillespie County Fair. He said that he has been attending since he was 2 years old and doesn't recall a single year missed. Someday...Lord willing...that may be me...I'm gonna try to make it every year to that fair and I can't wait to see how it grows and hopefully doesn't change a bit!
